Finding Poetry Criticism

Just as we found original works in the catalog by poets, we can also find items in the collection about poets or poetry topics.  For example:

  • To find books about a poet and her works, do a subject heading search for the poet's name: Moore, Marianne   Note that there may be subheadings, which allow you to see only books about specific aspects of the artist's life or work.
  • You can also do a keyword search on an aspect of poetry:  prose poems  Sometimes this is not the most precise way to search for a topic.  Look at the subject headings in the catalog records to see if there is one that describes what you are looking for:  Prose poems, American.

As always, expanding your search by clicking Search OhioLINK will always give access to a broader collection of materials.

There are excellent reference resources that can help your search- for example, the Guide to British Poetry Explication or the Critical Survey of Poetry provides bibliographies of interpretations of specific poems and poets.

Online research tools

In addition to the online reference sources listed under the Reference Works tab above, there are several tools to use to find criticism and interpretation of poetry.
