Microsoft Word Spelling and Grammar Check Tool

If you would like to double check your grammar while working in MS Word, choose “Review” in the menu bar, and then click “spelling & grammar” in the Proofing group.  Also located under "Review" are “Thesaurus” to help you come up with words with similar meanings, which could help you avoid repeating the same words in your writing, and you can also get to “Translate” from here.

Similar options also exist in MS PowerPoint and other MS Office products under “Review.”

A few words of caution! Please be aware that it is possible to choose the wrong words and spelling when relying solely on fast tools such as MS Office Spelling & Grammar check, so make sure you read the suggestions offered, and look them up if unsure.

Understand and Avoid Plagiarism

In the cut-and-paste environment of the digital society, it is essential to acknowledge the intellectual property (words, ideas) of others in one's work. This is generally done through standardized citation methods. The Kelvin Smith Library provides access to tools and resources that will help with this process.

In addition to this guide, KSL keeps current copies of style guides, handbooks, and manuals on reserve at the Main Service Desk. Ask for these at the Main Service Desk.
