About KSL

Welcome To Kelvin Smith Library

Kelvin Smith Library (KSL) is the main library supporting the teaching and research of Case Western Reserve University with emphasis given to the College of Arts and Sciences, the Case School of Engineering and the Weatherhead School of Management. We are located between Thwing Student Center and Severance Hall.  There are two branch libraries: Kulas Music Library and the Astronomy Library.

Beginning early in the fall and spring semesters, we are open 24/7 for your convenience.  For details on all service and building hours visit  KSL Hours.

Other Case Libraries

In addition to Kelvin Smith Library, there are several other campus libraries serving the professional schools:

Case Affiliated Libraries - Affiliated Libraries

If you have a Case ID card, you have privileges at the Case affiliated libraries.

Check with the individual library if you have questions.

Print - Scan - Copy

Print

  • wēpa printers are available on the 1st floor at KSL and print from the computers on each floor. 

    Logon to a computer with your network ID & all your print jobs go the printer queue.  Finish your work, go to the printer & swipe your Case ID card.  You can  print or delete your document jobs.  Use your ID card to debit your CaseCash account. Wēpa cards of $5 face value are sold from a wēpa machine at the entrance of KSL. You can check your wēpa account balance online. wēpa printers do not take cash.

Scan

When you need a document, paper, or chapter but you don't want to make & keep paper copies, use the KIC Scanning Station on the first floor or scanners in the Freedman Center to scan them! It's fast, free, easy, and it saves paper! 

• Bring a USB or flash drive (optional)

• Insert your drive.

• Place your book, journal, paper, etc. on the flat surface.

• Press the scan icon on the screen and follow the directions to finish your document.

Copy

A photocopier are on the 1st  floor between the flat-bed scanners and wēpa print stationsUse your Case ID card to pay for the copies at 15 cents/page, or use coins, $1, or $5 bills.

Poster Printing

KSL offers consultation, printing, and online scheduling services for posters whether they are for your Research ShowCASE, class project, or conference presentation. 

Graduate/Faculty Research Commons

This space is located on the 2nd floor of Kelvin Smith Library.  Access is limited to currently enrolled graduate students and faculty. You must have your Case ID to enter. This is a space dedicated for scholarly reading and research. By pre-arrangement it maybe used for selected events for faculty and graduate students.

Study Carrels/Group Study Rooms

Study Carrels

  • KSL offers graduate student study carrels via an annual lottery, held each mid-September the week after the Labor Day holiday.

Group Collaboration Rooms

  • These rooms are available on the lower level of KSL and on the 3rd floor.
  • Usage is on first come first served basis.
  • Rooms are intended for group work (2 or more people) that requires conversation and consultation that might interfere with the quiet in other areas.
  • Each room is equipped with a 42 inch wall monitor with Hi-Def and VGA (Video Graphics Array) connections and comfortable furniture.
