Creating a New Computer File Folder

BE AWARE: Upon restarting the computer or removing the USB key, the computer will completely wipe the machine and its file contents. Any scans, documents or the like that are not saved in a file folder within ":D No Secure Temporary Storage drive" will be deleted. Create a file folder within this :D drive to temporarily store your work. Temporary storage will hold onto these documents for 1 week and will erase after every week. Remove your items before then.

PLEASE NOTE: With each computer station, users will have to create separate file folders since the computer drives are not interconnected.

1. Within the Start bar or on the computer's task bar, search for "File Explorer:"

2. Under "Computer," find ':D Temporary Storage' and click that storage container. The drive's contents will appear.

3. Within the ":D Not Secure Temporary Storage" drive, select "New Folder" along the top the top of the screen.

4. Name the folder your network ID (ex: abc123) and hit the "Enter" key.

***Please note: With each computer station, users will have to create separate file folders since the computer drives are not interconnected.

Prepping Material Holders

Top: Filmstrip Negative holder.

Bottom: Photo Slide holder.

Cleaning Photo Materials

Dust, Lint and Smudge free images provide clean and clear viewing material for scanning. Before loading your negatives or slides into their designated holders, give them some love by cleaning them up!

Surface Wear Protection

Above scan has noticeable surface wear and does have a large fingerprint in the middle of on the negative (thankfully not seen when scanned).

Before handling any of your photographs, don a pair of  provided nitrile gloves. Our fingers contain oils that are harmful to film surfaces and can cause irreversible damage if handled incorrectly. Don't stack negatives to minimize scratching.

Dust & Lint Removal

Above photo slide has numerous fibers and dust particles that are on the surface of image.

Use the provided soft haired Camel brush to dust off any debris from your negatives or slides. Once magnified and scanned in high resolution, all those small pieces of dust will be seen big time!

Determining Photograph Side with Emulsion

Above are examples of the emulsion side of photo slides. There are degrees of clarity when determining which is the correct side to view through.

Emulsion is the dull, matte side of the photo slide or negative that suspends the light sensitive materials that make up photographic images. Viewing through the emulsion side of the photograph will be like looking into a mirror--the orientation and anything within the image is backwards.

How to Tell:

1. Most photo slides will have the manufacturer information on the emulsion side.

2. The paper /plastic containers of photo slides may say "This Side Towards Screen" indicating the emulsion side.

3. Simply angling the slide or negative in the light like the above examples can be an easy way to tell which side is the emulsion base. Look for a dull, blemished surface and you will have the emulsion side.

4. For the few photo negatives or slides that have none of the above and are difficult to visually make out the emulsion properties, you'll just have to guess by what the image contains. If words are backwards, for instance, then that side is the emulsion.

Left Photo: Viewing Side; table's numerical contents are legible, and the underneath text is mirrored correctly. Right Photo: Emulsion Side; Contents are mirrored and illegible.

Correct Method for Loading Materials

Photo Slides

1. Locate the Photo Slide holder near the scanner.

2. With the emulsion side down, place the photo slide into the track and slide it in the direction the holder indicates underneath the plastic lip. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO LIFT THE LIP OR FORCE IT. YOU WILL BREAK IT. There is a plastic spring hidden underneath this lip that will secure the slide in place.

3. Push with your fingertip to engage the slide with this plastic spring and slot the photo slide into the holder.

Negatives

1. Locate the Photo Negative holder near the scanner.

2. Open the holder. With the emulsion side down, place the photo negatives in between the raised notches.

3. Snap the holder back closed and the photo negative is ready for viewing.

Opening Program

1. Insert the key into the USB port on the left side of the monitor. Computer will open automatically to the Freedman Center main page. Minimize for future use.

2. On the desktop, find the “SilverFast 8” icon and open:

***This will take a few moments to load. If it seems to get stuck or not respond, please be patient, the scanner is loading!

3.A pre-home screen will appear like so. Select another operating language if desired (Available languages are English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Japanese, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Korean, and Czech). Click "Start" on the bottom right.

4. Photo Negative - Photo Slide scanning home screen will look like the following:

Selection Window

When you open up the software, this red box is your viewfinder! Whatever is scanned within this viewfinder will be captured.

  • You can manipulate the window;

    • Stretching and increasing/decreasing its length or width.

    • Proportionally changing the window’s size by pulling a corner.

    • Grabbing the entire red window and moving to a preferred section of image.

    • Clicking and dragging the nobs will rotate the box like below.

Scanning Material

1. On the left of the operating screen, find the to-be scanned file's destination and resolution settings.

From left to right, top to bottom of this section, change the information:

a. "Name": Rename the file to photo slide's/ negative's contents.

b. "TIFF": Default scanning file type will be TIFF. You can change the file type to PSD, JPEG, JP2, or PDF by clicking the dropdown arrows.

c. "Path": Select your network ID file folder that you created earlier in this libguide or by selecting the file folder icon directly to the right.

***During this session, all scans using this scanner will dump into your file folder.

d. "Format": Default format will be custom. You can change by clicking the dropdown arrows or by selecting the images directly to the right.

e. "Preset": Default will set resolution to PPI (pixels per inch). Set the resolution to the highest, 7200. You can change the resolution and the style of resolution by clicking the dropdown arrows or entering the number into the next box.

***Note: The higher the resolution, the more quality of scan, the longer the scan will take. At 7,200 PPI, a single scan will take between 3 - 5 minutes.

2. Load your your slides or negatives emulsion side down into the holders. The images should correctly face you as you load them into the scanner. Otherwise, they will be upside down when scanned.

***There are notches on the inside of the scanner that correspond with the grooves on the material holders; there may be resistance when you insert the holder into the scanner due to this design. Don't worry, you aren't breaking it.

3. Select the correct viewing format for your photo negative or photo slide at the top left of the screen. Photo slides typically are viewed positively, and photo negatives are viewed negatively.

***Some products like Kodak Kodachrome require the kodachrome viewing to be toggled for proper viewing. These photo slides will say on the paper holder "Kodachrome" or "Kodachrome Transparency". See below example.

Left: Kodachrome Slide taken on the incorrect Positive Viewing format. Image colors are cooler.

Right: Kodachrome taken on the correct Kodachrome Viewing Format. Image colors are warmer.

4. Pre-scan your images. You can find the Pre-scan function at the top of your window.

5. Pre-scan edits can adjust light and shadows, saturation or hue and image sharpness of the final scan.  If you so choose, make those edits now. See below "In-App Functions" to learn more about these additives.

Original Scan.                                                                  Scan before Pre-Scan edits made.

6. If your pre-scan edits are made or you do not require them, click "Scan."

7. Scanning progress can be found the bottom left of the scanning screen. At 7,200 PPI, a single scan will take between 3 - 5 minutes.

8. Upon scan's completion, you may view your scan by clicking the icon to the right of the progress bar.
