Creating a New Computer File Folder

BE AWARE: Upon restarting the computer or removing the USB key, the computer will completely wipe the machine and its file contents. Any scans, documents or the like that are not saved in a file folder within ":D No Secure Temporary Storage drive" will be deleted. Create a file folder within this :D drive to temporarily store your work. Temporary storage will hold onto these documents for 1 week and will erase after every week. Remove your items before then.

PLEASE NOTE: With each computer station, users will have to create separate file folders since the computer drives are not interconnected.

1. Within the Start bar or on the computer's task bar, search for "File Explorer:"

2. Under "Computer," find ':D Temporary Storage' and click that storage container. The drive's contents will appear.

3. Within the ":D Not Secure Temporary Storage" drive, select "New Folder" along the top the top of the screen.

4. Name the folder your network ID (ex: abc123) and hit the "Enter" key.

***Please note: With each computer station, users will have to create separate file folders since the computer drives are not interconnected.

Opening Program

1. Insert the key into the USB port on the left side of the monitor. Computer will open automatically to the Freedman Center main page. Minimize for future use.

2. On the desktop, find the “Book Pavilion” icon and open:

***This will take a few moments to load. If it seems to get stuck or not respond, please be patient, the scanner is loading!

3. Book Scanning Home Screen will look like the following as it warms up.

4. Upon completion of warming up, the scanner will take a prescan of any material on the scanning bed. The scanning portal will be ready for action:

Selection Window

When you open up the software, this dashed box or marquee is your viewfinder! Whatever is scanned within this viewfinder will be captured.

  • You can manipulate the window;

    • Stretching and increasing/decreasing its length or width.

    • Proportionally changing the window’s size by pulling a corner.

    • Grabbing the entire window and moving to a preferred section of image.

Scanning Material

The Book Scanning software conveniently created a 3-step process to follow. Let's go to Step 1.

1. Locate Step 1 on the top right of the operating screen. This section is dedicated to changing the file format, scanning individual files or scanning groups of files, rotating the scans and selecting the destination file folder.

From top to bottom of this section, change the information:

a. "Purpose": Keep the pre-generated option "FILE Utility."

b. Scanning Attributes

1. "File Format": Default scanning file type will be a "Compressed Aldus TIFF."  You may change the file type to JPEG, BMP, PNG, Uncompressed TIFF and PDF by clicking the dropdown arrows.

2. "File Option": Choose whether to save each scan as a separate file or collectively as a single file.

3. "Rotation": Automatically have the scans rotate or not. When scanning a typical book to a single file, auto rotating at 180° will format the scans correctly; users will have determine when that rotation occurs by using the previewed page as their orientation page.

c. Save Settings

1. "Destination Folder": By clicking "Browse," select your network ID file folder found in "Not Secure Temporary Storage" that you created earlier in this libguide.

***During this session, all scans using this scanner will dump into your file folder.

2. "File Name Prefix": Rename the file to scan's contents.

2. Before any scanning occurs, pre-scan your images.

3. Open and place your book into the bookedge. Slide the book until flush with the scanner's edge indicated by the arrow. Lightly press down on the cover.

4. Using the on-screen buttons in Step 2 or the buttons found on the right side of the scanner, click "Preview."

***The on-screen buttons correspond with the buttons found on the right side of the scanner. Quickly scan pages by using the physical buttons without having to touch the computer.

5. With this preview, adjust the selection window to just outside of the book. Only the inside of the selection window will be scanned, and having that extra space around the book will allow for wiggle room when flipping the book around for scans.

6. The "Preview Mode" offers the option of seeing what each scanning stylecolor, grayscale and text (Black & White)looks like with your material. Find the one that best fits your needs.

Left to Right: Color Mode, Grayscale and Text (Black & White)

7.  When ready to scan, click or push the scanner button of Color, Grayscale or Text (Black & White). Flip and scan your book pages until complete.

8. The scans will deposit in your file folder automatically when exiting the program or upon clicking "Transfer."

Moving Files & Closing Program

Before you restart the computer, ensure your images are in your network ID folder found within the "Not Secure Temporary Storage :D" drive.

Remember to retrieve your files before the weekly wipe.
