RefWorks 2.0 Guide: How to Use RefWorks at Case: Creating an Account

VPN Reminder

Library resources are accessed openly by Case wired computers or by using the Case Wireless network. If connecting in any other method, please install, turn on, and log into VPN.

At the bottom of the KSL homepage, a green light says you have full access.

Access RefWorks

Please make sure you authenticate with the wireless network BEFORE you login!

Alumni Users

RefWorks Alumni Program:

All alumni of CWRU will have life-long access to RefWorks.

Access will continue to be available to our alumni as long as we continue to subscribe to RefWorks.


Please note: the Alumni access gives you access to the information you have stored in your RefWorks account.  It does NOT give you access to the articles, journals, or research databases that CWRU subscribes to; unless you have an alumni account.

Setting up your account

Before you create an account, please make sure you have logged in to VPN from off campus or with the wireless internet connection, BEFORE you create an account. Users who have hard wired internet access on campus; do not need to authenticate with VPN before registering.

WARNING: If you are not authenticated as a Case User before you start the registration, you will create trial account on the corporate site that will expire in two weeks.

  1. Login to VPN (when using a wireless connection)
  2. Got to the main RefWorks Page- Login Here
  3. On the main RefWorks page, click on the link to sign up for an individual account
  4. Complete the New User Information registration box

Note:  When creating your Login Name, please do not use the following characters:

* Asterisk

< >[ ] Brackets

= Equal sign

+ Plus sign

" Quotes

\ / Slashes

, . : ; Comma, Period, Colon, Semicolon

5. Click Create Account.

Please note: You will receive an email confirmation with your RefWorks username and password and the Case RefWorks Group Code. Please keep this message. You may need the Case RefWorks Group Code if you login to RefWorks from off-campus wiothout logging into VPN first.

After you click on create account, you'll be brought in to your new, empty RefWorks account where you can begin adding your references.
