Discussion Questions

Discussion Questions

1.  Why did the #MeToo movement take off in 2017 despite Burke initiating it in 2006? Is #metoo radical or reactionary, a watershed or merely a flood? How can employers, campuses, and courts most fully and fairly respond to the court of public opinion?

2. Does the #MeToo movement accurately address sexual misconduct? Should we assume guilty until proven innocent with men accused of sexual assault?

3. Over a million people stood up to be counted in solidarity, using the hashtag #MeToo. But sexual harassment is nothing new. Women have encountered sexual harassment since entering the workforce, though the modern fight for equal rights has brought attention and visibility to the problem. How has the fight against sexual harassment changed over time? How can sexual harassment be stopped?

4. Why might this be a difficult topic to discuss? What barriers might there be to learning about this topic and discussing it as a group? Are there ground rules that should be developed? What would those look like?

5. The #MeToo Movement has challenged many to reevaluate the ways in which sexual misconduct is addressed in communities, workplaces, and universities. However, the public discussion and media coverage have mostly focused on highly visible individuals in the public eye. How can we start to broaden the conversation and consider the unique vulnerabilities of those from more diverse social classes, races, age groups, and sexual and gender identities?
