Important Announcement

**ATTENTION** TIME-SENSITIVE ANNOUNCEMENT FOR CWRU RefWorks USERS

Dear RefWorks users,

After careful consideration, the Kelvin Smith Library has made the decision to discontinue campus-wide institutional subscription to the RefWorks citation management tool.  Given the very high cost-per-usage, continued subscription to RefWorks no longer represents a sustainable, cost-effective investment in the Library’s support of CWRU’s teaching, learning and research activities.  RefWorks user account activity has declined steadily in the past several years, with a 50% drop in active users in just the past two years.

Please be advised that all CWRU RefWorks accounts will be closed on December 31, 2018.  Data in these accounts will not be available after this date.  All RefWorks citation data from CWRU user accounts must be backed up and/or transitioned to another citation management application before December 31st.  Please see details below regarding KSL support for this transition.

KSL is prepared to provide full support for CWRU RefWorks users (faculty, students, staff and alumni) needing to extract and secure their RefWorks data, and transition to a new citation manager.  Other citation management applications are readily available (some for free) with very comparable functionality for citation data gathering, organization, cloud-based document storage, and word processing integration.  Going forward, KSL will provide user support for three of these applications - Zotero, Mendeley, and EndNote.

Please see this online guide (https://researchguides.case.edu/citation-management) for comparisons of these applications, as well as procedural details for the citation data backup/transfer process. The citation data backup and transfer processes are relatively quick and easy, and KSL staff will be on hand to help RefWorks users complete this process.

What is RefWorks?

Before you use RefWorks it helps to understand what it is and how it works.

RefWorks is an online system where you can store references and citations in preparation of writing a paper or doing a presentation. RefWorks uses a system of folders to organize your citations. You can create as many folders as needed, move citations between folders, and rename or delete folders. The 3 main features of RefWorks are:

  • storing & organizing your citations
  • creating correctly formatted bibliographies
  • creating in-text references

Why should you use RefWorks?

  1. It's free to all students and employees of Case Western Reserve University
  2. It's simple to use- yet very powerful
  3. Access and manage your information online from any browser
  4. It stores your citations in the cloud so you can access them anywhere you have internet access.
  5. RefWorks is available in several language interfaces
  6. Your RefWorks account remains active upon your graduation, allowing for life-long access.
