Finding Items in the Catalog and OhioLINK

KSL's online catalog and that of the broader OhioLINK collection can provide access to many useful items for your research.

For this course, remember that using a Library of Congress Subject Heading search can be a very focused way to find items in our collection. Here are some examples:

  • Say you are considering how the idea of "empire" is reflected in works of literature. For you, the subject heading Imperialism in literature would be a useful one.
  • You might instead be interested in how the issue of slavery appears in literature, so the subject heading Slavery in literature might be useful to find secondary research.

Remember that these subject heading are descriptive tags that lead you directly to the books most closely related to these topics.

Important Reference Works

How do you know which of the books in our collection are the most influential? The most controversial? If you are not an expert in the field, it might be hard to figure that out. One type of resource that will help you find this out is a reference work! This is where you can find experts telling you exactly what research has been done on your topic, and which books and articles are most important.

Included here are examples of reference works—some in print, some online—that might be of use to you, as well as links to the places which you can find these and others like them.
