AI Literacy

Information literacy is the lens through which librarians and other information professionals define the skills needed to find, evaluate, and use information. AI literacy is, in and of itself, a separate set of skills that includes information literacy, but also touches on:

  • Understanding the hardware and software that powers AI
  • Effectively communicating with AI through prompt engineering
  • Creating new content using AI
  • Considering the safety and privacy measures, as well as ethical issues, raised by AI
  • Recognizing errors, inconsistencies, and bias in AI-generated content
  • Customizing your AI use for specific educational or career needs related to your goals, assignments, or career aspirations

AI and ChatGPT are increasingly playing roles in the research and information creation processes. These pages will provide some guidance about how you can critically think about AI as it relates to your own research and information creation needs.

It can be helpful to apply a framework to identify your key literacy skills in a given area and identify where you might have gaps. AI literacy is an emerging field, and there are several examples of frameworks. Below is an example of an AI literacy framework using the UNESCO Digital Literacy Global Framework and then applying AI concepts. It’s just one example of many, and it provides a starting point for assessing your own AI competencies.
