What is in the equipment kit and how to borrow.

Checking - Out

KSL's current loanable technology collection are found at the Tech Table, directly to the right of the Service Center. Staff will retrieve your desired kit if available and check it out at the Service Center with an appropriate CWRU or CIM ID.

Available for checkout to CWRU & CIM students, faculty, and staff at the Service Center. CWRU Alumni, CIA, Public or Visiting patrons are not permitted to check out loanable equipment kits.

Treatment of Equipment

We understand that this is an Action Camera and that accidents occur. Please treat the kit as if it were your own. Let us know if you have lost or damaged the equipment. You're only financially responsible for the loss or damages, not the entire kit. Be aware of the below:

Camera

→ There is NO external case for the GoPro. Be mindful to not scratch the screens or lens.

→ Don't purposefully drop the camera.

Make sure the battery compartment is closed before submerging.

***No amount of waterproofing will prevent irreputable damage to the camera's internal workings.

→ Max 10 m/ 33 feet underwater depth cannot be exceeded.

***An external housing rated to go beyond 10 m/ 33 feet is required and NOT included in the present kit.

Accessories

→ Don't force apart or force together pieces.

***We also understand that the accessory's plastic will degrade over time, faster in harsher environments or with heavily utilized pieces, and that plastic is just not durable.

Pre-Check

Charging & Deleting Old Media

To ensure that you have a completely free SD card and a full battery, check the camera beforehand.  KSL is not responsible for charging the equipment or removing files from the SD card. We advise patrons to be courteous to the users that follow by charging and deleting files but sometimes, that just doesn't happen.

Playing with the Camera

We highly recommend getting to know the camera, the settings and its functions before you begin filming. YouTube has hundreds of tutorials and tips-tricks to get you started with the Hero 8 and GoPro's Quik app. We aren't going to reinvent the wheel when it comes to "How-To"s.

Housekeeping

Think how you'd like to have received the camera; physically clean, SD card free from the previous user's media files, and fully chargedYou are passing on the equipment to the next hands. Be courteous.

Post-Use Cleaning

We expect the kit to return to KSL in the state it was checked out in: CLEAN. Staff are NOT responsible for removing mud, dirt, salt build up, sand, or anything of the sort from the camera, accessories or equipment bag. If a kit is returned to the front desk not cleaned, it will be handed back and remain on your account until returned clean.

Cleaning Procedure:

1. Submerge the dirty item (s) in clean water and scrub with fingers or a soft towel to remove any physical debris. Be mindful of the Hero 8's battery compartment, the screens and any small parts.

→ If the kit was used in salt water, submerge multiple times and vigorously swish about.

***Salt Build-Up is extremely important to remove because it corrodes equipment easily and reduces their longevity.

2. When item (s) are visually clean, hand dry or air dry completely.

→ Putting wet or damp items into the kit will result in mildew or mold growth, and the user will be held responsible for damages.

Deleting Media Files

Library Staff are NOT responsible for removing media files from the cameras, so if there is anything you don't want to be seen by the next user please delete or transfer the files.

Charging the Camera

We hope that each user thinks of the next patron and returns a camera with a full charge. Library staff are NOT expected to charge the camera.

Transferring Media

BE AWARE: The Library is NOT responsible with removing your media from the MicroSD card. If you don't want your media files to be seen by the next user, please remove them. We highly recommend NOT removing the MicroSD card and USE THE PROVIDED DATA CABLE.

There are 2 methods for media transfer:

1. Downloading the GoPro 'Quik' app, linking the Hero 8 through the app, and exporting the data. YouTube has hundreds of tutorials on the subject.

→ Requires Bluetooth & Wi-Fi access.

2. You can transfer your media through the USB A→C Cable directly to your computer. YouTube also has tutorials on this method.
