Kelvin Smith Library
In-Line with the Scanning Laser
In order to be scanned, all intended scanning items will need to be in-line with the KIC's scanning laser. Place your item in the lower middle of the scanning bed as shown above to engage with the laser.
Documents
Flat Mode is ideal for documents. Two pages can be set up on either side of the scanning bed.
Book
Books may be laid flat, and weights found at the scanner can be placed to keep the pages flat.
Alternatively, users can prop the scanning bed into a "V" for books.
Before tapping "Scan," select your desired settings by tapping the "Change Settings." Some of these settings such as color can be adjusted after the scan is made in the "Modify Image (s)" section.
Upon tapping "Scan," the Copyright Notice will pop up. This notices needs to be read and accepted. Declining the notice will otherwise cancel the scanning transaction.
Note: If you are emailing your scans, "batch" your scanned files (1-20 images per PDF), and send them frequently to prevent slow send times. Sending by email may degrade the quality of the scans. Double check the files have arrived before leaving.
1. Once the Copyright Notice is accepted, the KIC will automatically scan based on the selected scan settings. On the computer monitor section of the scanning unit, the scan will projected. If those scanned settings are not to the user's liking, the image can be deleted and the settings changed, or some of these changes can be reversed in the "Modify Image (s)" tab.
2. Users may modify their scans in the next tab "Modify Image (s)." Brightness, Contrast, Resolution, Color Mode and cropping can be accomplished here. Any changes will project up onto the computer monitor.
3. Export your files to your email or to a flash drive. Default export file format is PDF, but users may change the file format to JPEG, PNG, or DOC. Files can be renamed on the right.
Failure to Scan—Copyright Declined
If users decline the copyright notice, the scanner will not scan. An acceptance of this copyright notice must happen before any scanning occurs. We recommend reading the notice and accepting. If you have anymore questions about copyright or are concerned, please email freedmancenter@case.edu.
Failure to Scan—Scanner Cannot Find Material
Your document or book may not be within the KIC's laser. This laser recognizes materials on the scanning bed, and if not found, will prompt the user to reposition.
The laser will remain on at this point. Simply move the material you want to scan so that the laser is in contact with it. Try your scan again.
Be aware, however, that the greater the quantity of scans are, the longer an email will take for it to be sent from the scanner. Emailing files reduces the file size which also reduces the quality.
For better quality, use a flash drive.
For the best quality, use one of the Freedman Center Lab scanning workstations.
We encourage you to peruse the Freedman Center Home Software Page for specifics on Post-Editing software.
These computers are available for check-out at the Service Center Desk.
