Robert E. McGinnis began his career in 1947 as a cartoonist, and produced his first cover illustrations for 1956 issues of the magazines True Detective and Master Detective. Then in 1958, he painted his first paperback book cover, and from that day forward his work was in demand. The emergence of the "McGinnis Woman"--long-legged, intelligent, alluring, and enigmatic--established him as the go-to artist for detective novels. His work appeared on Mike Shayne titles and the Perry Mason series, and he produced 100 paintings for the Carter Brown adventures. Yet McGinnis became famous for his work in other genres as well: espionage, romance, historicals, gothics, and Westerns. BATWING, a romantic, hard science fiction series, tells of a comet strike threat to Earth. This is a compelling memoir by Robert P. Madison: an architect, entrepreneur, and civic leader. This study examines her singular approach to literary commitment as a critical reworking of aesthetic models and modes of interpretation. Focusing on four dominant problematics in Condé's work-history and globalization in La Belle Créole and Moi, Tituba sorcière...noire de Salem, intertextuality and reception in La migration des cours and Célanire cou-coupé, trauma and subjectivity in En attendant le bonheur and Desirada, community and ethics in Traversée de la mangrove and Histoire de la femme cannibale-this analysis proposes to elucidate how, and to what ends, Condé engages, and alters, approaches to reading, staging the problematic, yet pragmatic, need to read well. This hermeneutic imperative foregrounds the need to engage with texts, to cannibalize texts while recognizing their fundamental opacity and inexhaustibility, their resistance to the reader's interpretive habits.

First published in 1997. Considerable research has been done to identify neighbourhood influences on children’s affective states, motivation, and behaviour. This population, along with the elderly, are the nation’s largest dependent groups. In contrast, little research has been done to determine what impact living among poor neighbours has upon older Americans, specifically upon their psychological well-being and neighbourhood satisfaction. In this study the author has sought out to explore this deficit, using a sociological standpoint to examine quality-of-life issues relevant to elderly inner-city residents. This title will be of interest to students of sociology and urban studies.

In Fighting for Dignity, Sarah S. Willen explores what happened when the Israeli government launched an aggressive deportation campaign targeting newly arrived migrants from countries as varied as Ghana and the Philippines, Nigeria, Colombia, and Ukraine. Although the campaign was billed as a solution to high unemployment, it had another goal as well: to promote an exclusionary vision of Israel as a Jewish state in which non-Jews have no place. The deportation campaign quickly devastated Tel Aviv's migrant communities and set the stage for even more aggressive antimigrant and antirefugee policies in the years to come. Fighting for Dignity traces the roots of this deportation campaign in Israeli history and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and shows how policies that illegalize and criminalize migrants wreak havoc in their lives, endanger their health, and curtail the human capacity to flourish. Children born to migrant parents are especially vulnerable to developmental and psychosocial risks. Drawing on nearly two decades of ethnographic engagement in homes and in churches, medical offices, advocacy organizations, and public spaces, Willen shows how migrants struggle to craft meaningful, flourishing lives despite the exclusions and vulnerabilities they endure. To complement their perspectives, she introduces Israeli activists who reject their government's exclusionary agenda and strive to build bridges across difference, repair violations of migrants' dignity, and resist policies that violate their own moral convictions. Friends and Partners: The Legacy of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Basil O'Connor in the History of Polio presents the story of two men, one the President of the United States, the other an ambitious attorney, who became the "architects of the fight against polio." With unfettered access to the March of Dimes Archives, this book explores the friendship and partnership that ensured the end of polio in the US, with exclusive pictures and documentation. The book describes the founding and history of Franklin D. Roosevelt's (FDR) polio colony in Warm Springs, Georgia, and the early years of the March of Dimes as established by FDR in 1938 as the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. Other little-known aspects of the partnership are also included, such as O'Connor's participation in FDR's "Brain Trust," the President's birthday ball fundraisers during the Great Depression, the March of Dimes during World War II, and O'Connor's simultaneous leadership of the American Red Cross. Finally, the book explores, in detail, how O'Connor used the legacy of FDR after his death in 1945 to promote the philosophy of "freedom from disease" to achieve the goal of ending polio through the March of Dimes. My first book, The Business Zoo, was intended as a primer for people moving up in organizations. Its overriding and concluding theme was the unique role that a firm’s culture and leadership has on its success or failure and especially on its people. That book ended with a quote that Business may be a Zoo, but it is also a giant circle of people. Which brings us to The People Zoo. This book will go into more depth on the key aspects of how people deal with their organizations and each other. And we will drill into the impact that these activities have on an individual’s personal life. We will look at how we learn, grow and lead, and how we deal with crises, failures, transitions and exits along the way. This book is much more personal and focuses on my own stories: some good and some bad. This is not meant to be an autobiography but rather an attempt to guide others by showing situations that were embarrassing and/or extremely stressful, in my own career.

The story of white flight and the neglect of black urban neighborhoods has been well told by urban historians in recent decades. Yet much of this scholarship has downplayed black agency and tended to portray African Americans as victims of structural forces beyond their control. In this history of Cleveland's black middle class, Todd Michney uncovers the creative ways that members of this nascent community established footholds in areas outside the overcrowded, inner-city neighborhoods to which most African Americans were consigned. In asserting their right to these outer-city spaces, African Americans appealed to city officials, allied with politically progressive whites (notably Jewish activists), and relied upon both black and white developers and real estate agents to expand these "surrogate suburbs" and maintain their livability until the bona fide suburbs became more accessible. By tracking the trajectories of those who, in spite of racism, were able to succeed, Michney offers a valuable counterweight to histories that have focused on racial conflict and black poverty and tells the neglected story of the black middle class in America's cities prior to the 1960s.
