Book Scanner

An overview of digitization equipment in the Freedman Center with step-by-step instructions.

Book Scanner Tutorial

This one-page guide will give you the bare bones of what you need to work the book scanner. For those who just need quick scans, the quick guide may meet your needs. When in doubt, default to the full tutorial, which begins below.

If you get lost, refer back to the user manual on the Home page. Contact information for KSL staff is available on the left-hand navigation of each page. Service Center staff can also assist with basic troubleshooting.

Before you Scan

Settings will depend on the following characteristics of your project:

  1. The largest you can scan is a book 17” tall and 12” wide
  2. You can scan in color, grayscale, or black and white
  3. Delicacy of the object and its margins, as turning every page of the book and pushing deeply on the spine has the possibility of causing the book to fall apart
  4. How much of the book you are scanning
  5. If scanning a large section, we suggest that you also scan the blank pages so you can use the Odd and Even page editing features in Adobe Acrobat during post-processing

Start the Scanner

Make sure the scanner is turned on. The switch is on the right side of the scanner.

Position the Material on the Scanner Bed

The starting point of the scanner is the bottom, right-hand corner:

  1. On your desired starting page, place your open book into the front edge of the scanner. The spine should be facing towards you.
  2. Slide the book to the right until it is flush with the edge. A gray arrow points to where the book should be. You do not need to close the scanner's lid.

proper book placement on the scanner

You do not need to lay the book open across the scanner nor do you need to close the scanner lid. Doing either defeats the purpose of the design of this scanner which prevents damaging your book and providing the clearest scan.

incorrect scanning placement of bookclosing the scanning lid isn't necessary
