Book Scanner

An overview of digitization equipment in the Freedman Center with step-by-step instructions.

Book Scanner FAQs

See general scanning questions below. If you have a question that is not on this list, contact us using the information on the left-hand navigation.

What software do I use with this scanner?

Book Pavilion is installed on the machine hooked up to this equipment. You can also use Adobe programs like Acrobat for post-processing.

Where is this scanner located?

It is in the Yellow Sun area of the Freedman Center Technology Lab. You can see the scanners laid out on the table next to their corresponding computers.

Do I need any special equipment to digitize at this scanner?

No special equipment needed. You only need the item you want to digitize and the scanner.

How does this scanner compare to a typical scanner?

This scanner makes it easier to digitize a codex, which is how most books are put together. If your book has its pages held together in a spine, this scanner allows you to avoid squashing the book under a lid or flattening it beyond where the spine wants to go. It still can cause some damage, so if you have a potentially fragile book, reach out to FreedmanCenter@case.edu or make an appointment with us to consult on what would be your best option.

How much of a book can I digitize before worrying about copyright?

All digitization projects should think about copyright and fair use, and the Freedman Center's technology should not be used to infringe on licensing and copyright. Freedman Center staff cannot provide legal advice. We recommend library resources as guidance.

If you have a question that is not on this list, contact us using the information on the left-hand navigation.

Who can use the scanners?

Freedman Center technology is available to CWRU affiliates and the public. See our current hours on the Technology Lab homepage.

Where are the scanners located?

In the Yellow Sun section of the Freedman Center Technology Lab, on the first floor of Kelvin Smith Library.

What is the best scanner for my project?

Each scanning guide lists what the scanner is best suited for. Additionally, we have a poster in the Technology Lab (replicated below) that assists in selecting the right scanner.

What can I scan in the Freedman Center?

See the list of what we can scan (and digitize in general!) on the Technology Lab Research Guide. If you don't see something on here and want to know if we can help, email FreedmanCenter@case.edu for a consultation.

How long does it take to scan something?

The length of time for digitization depends on several factors:

  1. How high of a resolution you want (the more detailed the scan, the longer it takes to complete and the bigger the resulting file)
  2. How many objects you need to scan, and if you are scanning front and back
  3. Which scanner you are using
  4. How comfortable you are with the scanner

Setup is very important with digitization projects, as it keeps you from repeating the process. Be sure to check that you are scanning objects at the right settings and with the right file type as the output.

I have a big scanning project. Any tips before I get started?

Yes: email FreedmanCenter@case.edu or book directly with us to set up a consultation. We can help you think through your workflow and make suggestions for settings and configurations so you get the best result.

What do I do if I am in the middle of a process and need help?

Look through the user manual and tutorial on the Research Guide (where you are right now!) to see if your question is addressed. Freedman Center and KSL staff can assist with basic troubleshooting. Come by during open lab times or stop by the Service Center. We cannot scan materials for you.

Can I leave my files on the computer and come back later?

We do not recommend this and cannot guarantee the files will still be available. Computers are wiped regularly.
