Bulk Photo Scanner

Types of photos that can be scanned and how to scan them.

Request a Freedman Center USB key from the Service Center Desk, and staff will check out the key to your account if available. 

Available for checkout to CWRU, CIA & CIM students, faculty, and staff; CWRU Alumni, Public or Visiting patrons must complete the "Public Patron Use Form" before receiving equipment key. 

Creating a New Computer File Folder

BE AWARE: Upon restarting the computer or removing the USB key, the computer will completely wipe the machine and its file contents. Any scans, documents or the like that are not saved in a file folder within ":D No Secure Temporary Storage drive" will be deleted. Create a file folder within this :D drive to temporarily store your work. Temporary storage will hold onto these documents for 1 week and will erase after every week. Remove your items before then.

PLEASE NOTE: With each computer station, users will have to create separate file folders since the computer drives are not interconnected.

1. Within the Start bar or on the computer's task bar, search for "File Explorer:" 

2. Under "Computer," find ':D Temporary Storage' and click that storage container. The drive's contents will appear. 

3. Within the ":D Not Secure Temporary Storage" drive, select "New Folder" along the top the top of the screen. 

4. Name the folder your network ID (ex: abc123) and hit the "Enter" key.

***Please note: With each computer station, users will have to create separate file folders since the computer drives are not interconnected.

Opening Program

1. Insert the key into the USB port on the left side of the monitor. Computer will open automatically to the Freedman Center main page. Minimize for future use.

2. On the desktop, find the “FastFoto” icon and open:

***This will take a few moments to load. If it seems to get stuck or not respond, please be patient, the scanner is loading!

3. Bulk Photo scanning home screen will look like the following:

Scanning Material

BE AWARE: REMOVE any staples from photographs. Face up or down, the Bulk Photo Scanner will capture the front and backside of the photographs. The Scanner will scan 30 photographs at a time.

1. On the top left of the Home screen, click "Start Scanning."

2. A new pop-up will appear as follows:

3. Add your network ID (abc123) to the "Subject" line and checkmark the "Create a Subfolder for this batch of pictures." Adding the "Year" and "Month or Season" is optional. Once completed, click "Start Scanning" at the bottom right of the pop-up.

***This scanner saves all scanned photographs into its own folder within the ":D No Secure Temporary Storage drive." Users must remove their scans from this folder and place it into their personal file folder created at the beginning of this user guide. 

4. The Scanner will scan all the items. At the completion of its scanning, it will prompt further scanning. Continue scanning by clicking "Scan Next Batch." Otherwise, click "Done Scanning."

Inn-App Functions

Above are the In-App Functions available to you when using the scanner. 

1.  "Start Scanning": When you are ready to scan photographs.

 

2.  "Share": After scanning your images, you may share them via email or through Facebook.

 

3.  "Upload": Upload your completed scans to digital clouds like Dropbox or Google Drive.

"Edit": Basic photo editing. If a more robust photo editing software is required, please our software guide for a full list of our current licenses.

Moving Files and Closing Program

Before you restart the computer, please move your subfolder from the "FastFoto" file folder into your network ID folder found within the "Not Secure Temporary Storage :D" drive.

Remember to retrieve your files before the weekly wipe.
