CWRU Faculty Open Access (OA) Policy and FAQ

An information resource on the CWRU Faculty OA Policy approved by Faculty Senate March 2024.

Policy Proposal Timeline: Drafting, Vetting, Revision, Discussion, Consideration

Spring 2024:

  • Policy approved by the Faculty Senate March 25, 2024

Fall 2023:

  • Proposal and pilot results presented to Faculty Senate Committee on the University Libraries
  • Proposal and pilot results presented to full Faculty Senate Executive Committee
  • Proposal and pilot results presented to full Faculty Senate for discussion

Spring/Summer 2023:

  • OA Committee solicits OA article deposits in Scholarly Commons @ CWRU from faculty publishing under OhioLINK OA Publishing Agreements (see OA Publishing Opportunities)
  • Open Access Working Group transitions to the OA Committee
  • Virtual open session for faculty held by the CWRU Libraries' OA Committee on OA Policy Proposal and OA Pilot Program results

Fall 2022:

  • Scholarly Commons @ CWRU is acquired by KSL to serve as CWRU's institutional repository for scholarly content
  • Open sessions for faculty held by the CWRU Libraries' Open Access Working Group in collaboration with other departments and offices
  • At the request of the Faculty Senate, KSL launches the OA Pilot Project with faculty volunteers to better understand how the OA Policy will work.

Fall 2021:

*Fall 2021 dates are tentative subject to calendar & agenda of the Faculty Senate and its committees

  • Revised policy proposal and FAQ resource published online and presented to the Faculty Senate Committee on the University Libraries for discussion (September 2021)
  • Open forums and information sessions for faculty to be held, hosted by the CWRU Libraries' Open Access Working Group in collaboration with other departments and offices (*October-November 2021)
  • Feedback from fall open forums collected and analyzed by the CWRU Libraries' Open Access Working Group in collaboration with the Faculty Senate Committee on the University Libraries; Revisions to policy proposal made and presented to appropriate Faculty Senate Committees (*November 2021)
  • Presentation of final draft of proposed Faculty Open Access Policy to Faculty Senate for consideration (*December 2021)

Summer 2021:

  • CWRU Libraries' Open Access Working Group analyzes feedback from spring 2021 information sessions, prepares revisions to proposal & FAQ resource for early fall presentation to Faculty Senate Committee on the University Libraries (July-August 2021)

Spring 2021:

  • Proposal presented to Faculty Senate Committee on the University Libraries for discussion (March 2020)
  • FSCUL requests CWRU Libraries' Open Access Working Group host open forums to solicit faculty feedback
    • Two open forums held (March-April 2020)
    • Information session held at School of Medicine (April 2020)
    • Feedback collected and shared with CWRU Libraries' Open Access Working Group
  • Proposal and update on open forums presented to Faculty Senate Executive Committee (April 2020)
  • Proposal presented to full Faculty Senate for discussion (April 26, 2020)

Fall 2020:

  • Following recommendation by Vice Provost & University Librarian, CWRU Libraries Open Access Working Group drafts initial proposal and FAQ guide as an information resource to be submitted to the Faculty Senate Committee on the University Libraries (September-October 2020)
  • Policy draft and FAQ resource shared with copyright, licensing & policy experts in the Law School, Technology Transfer Office, & Office of General Counsel to solicit feedback and determine consistency with the Faculty Handbook and university IP policies (November 2020)
