VR Headset

What is in the equipment kit and how to borrow.

Checking - Out

KSL's current loanable technology collection are found at the Tech Table, directly to the right of the Service Center. Staff will retrieve your desired kit if available and check it out at the Service Center with an appropriate CWRU or CIM ID.

Available for checkout to CWRU & CIM students, faculty, and staff at the Service Center. CWRU Alumni, CIA, Public or Visiting patrons are not permitted to check out loanable equipment kits.

Treatment of Equipment

Please treat the kit as if it were your own. Let us know if you have lost or damaged the equipment. You're only financially responsible for the loss or damages, not the entire kit.

Pre-Check & Charging

Controller Batteries

Library Staff will add batteries to the controllers upon checkout. If your kit didn't receive batteries or the batteries are not functioning, please return to the Service Center during operational hours for replacements.

Charging the Headset

Library Staff are NOT responsible for charging the headset. Make sure the VR Headset and the extra ANKER battery is charged before using.

Safety

Hand up, indicating user to "stop." The hand is in a stop sign.

STOP. Save yourself some hurt and play safe.

Ideal gaming space per Meta's recommendation is a 6.5 foot by 6.5 foot (2 meter by 2 meter). Place a tape "X" to indicate the center of your game space.

If you can take a big step in either direction and not touch anything with an extended hand, you have a achieved the best VR space.

If you can take a step and touch objects, you need to make some adjustments

  1. Declutter.
  2. Move furniture out of the way.
  3. Be mindful of any ceiling light fixtures or fans above you.
  4. Move pets to another room so that you don't step or trip on them. You will not see or hear them.

If you can take a step and still touch objects, you need to remain stationary while standing or you need to take a seat.

We recommend putting additional tape down to mark the corners of your gaming zone if you have bystanders. The tape corners will help indicate where exactly they can go without interacting with your VR game space.

Once your game space has been safely decided, you are ready to begin.

New to VR?

Slow & Steady now!

Jumping into VR is such an awesome experience, but if this is your first time playing a VR video game or touring the educational applications, you may develop headaches and nausea. Motion sickness is a common side-effect of using VR headsets for the first time.

To mitigate these symptoms:

  • Start with stationary games or applications.
  • Play for only a short while, < 30 minutes.
  • Take frequent breaks.
  • Stop early before you get too motion sick.

Know your limits. Over time, you will build endurance for longer game time, and with non-stationary games and apps. Remember: You can always return later when you're feeling up for it!

Setup

Our Headsets are Factory Reset before each Checkout

Users will need to link your Facebook or your Instagram account, or create a Meta account to access games and applications. We recommend using a personal email, not your CWRU or CIM email in case any purchases are made and you graduate. There are free game and application options available, but any purchases will need to be completed by the user. Your linked account information will be wiped from the headset upon return to KSL.

Have Glasses?

If you require glasses to see far away, don't take them off when playing VR! Our kit is set up so that you can continue wearing your glasses if they are < 142 mm wide and < 50 mm tall.

The interior headset lens may be adjusted:

  1. Gently grab the sides of one of the lens.
  2. Either pull to increase the lens distance (up to 3) or push to decrease the lens distance (down to 1).

If you're having difficulty, watch Meta's Headset adjustment tutorial for a visual step-by-step or read through Meta's lens adjustment article.

Headset Strap Adjustments

DON'T force your head into the headset. Please.

1. On the headstrap's back, rotate the turn dial to loosen and easily slide your head in.

2. Using the same turn dial, tighten until snug. If your head feels like someone is squeezing it, loosen the dial a bit. The images--if the headset is on--may be out-of-focus, don't worry.

3. Along your crown runs the top strap. Adjust the strap so that the image is clear, and it doesn't feel like the headset is pulling down on your nose.

If you're having difficulty, watch Meta's Headset adjustment tutorial for a visual step-by-step or browse another adjustment YouTube tutorial.

Still can't see the image clearly? You may need to adjust the interior lens' distance to match your eyes' distance. Read through Meta's lens adjustment article to determine your eye spacing and its equivalent on the headset. Rewatch Meta's Headset adjustment tutorial if needed.

Pairing Headset with Meta Account

Whether its through Facebook or Instagram, or you've created a Meta account with a personal email, you will need an account to pair the headset, and add games or applications to. Once you have powered on the headset and gone through the opening safety sequence, the headset will prompt a pairing code.

To pair your Meta account with the VR Headset:

1. Take off the headset but keep it powered on.

2. Download the Meta Horizons mobile app (Android or iOS).

3. Open and login to your account.

4. Locate on the top of the home screen the headset icon and tap.

5. Select Meta Quest 2 from the model list, and pair using the provided pairing code.

If you've already paired your headset and are running to connectivity issues, please watch Meta's Troubleshooting Pairing Issues tutorial.

Internet Connection is Required!

Users will not be able to access their Meta account and link their games or applications without being connected.

Automatically, our VR Headset kits will connect to Case Registered. If you are not on campus, you will need to change to your preferred WiFi network in the settings.

If you're having difficulty finding or changing the internet, read through Meta's WiFi Connection article.

Safety Boundary

Think of this boundary as your literal safety bubble. If you approach your created boundary, a blue grid will appear and turn red the closer you get to it. If you exit the boundary entirely, the headset's safety will flip and the front cameras will display your actual surroundings to prevent you from running into objects.

Game Time!

Check out Meta's games and applications on their website or through the Meta Horizon app (Android and iOS).

Housekeeping

Be courteous. Return the VR Headset fully charged so the next user doesn't have to wait to play.
