Using the Freedman Center Lab

Assistance for in-person use of the Freedman Center technology lab

Digitization Equipment and Materials

The lab has four workstations for digitization, located in the Cyan (triangle ▲) and Yellow (sun ) areas; see the visual lab layout. The following media formats can be digitized in the lab:

Audio

  • Audio Cassettes
  • Records (33, 45, and 78)
  • Micro Cassettes
  • Any audio with an 1/8" jack output; bring your own device
  • 1/4" open reel (reel to reel) self-service by appointment

 Video

  • VHS Tapes (NTSC, PAL, and SECAM)
  • Betamax (Regular)*
  • 8mm Video (Regular, High 8, Digital 8)
  • Super VHS
  • VHS-C
  • Laserdisk
  • DVD (NTSC and PAL - any region)
  • Blue-ray**
  • MiniDV & FullSizeDV (NTSC and PAL)
  • uMatic

Please note the digitization process is in real time, so 1 hour of video takes 1 hour to digitize. Video generally needs to be compressed into more manageable files after it has been digitized as the raw digitized format is 12GB per hour. This process also takes time.

*In repair as of August 2025; check back for availability or email FreedmanCenter@case.edu

**Blu-ray can only be captured in SD quality NOT HD quality

Scanning Materials

  • Flatbed Scanners
    • Medium Format (12x17”)
    • Book Edge Flatbed Scanning (for books up to 12x17”)
  • Slide & Negative Scanning
  • Bulk Scanners
    • Sheet-fed documents (paper; staples should be removed)
    • Sheet-fed photos

If you don't see something on the list, email FreedmanCenter@case.edu for a consultation.
