Photo Negative / Photo Slide Scanner

An overview of digitization equipment in the Freedman Center with step-by-step instructions.

Software Won't Boot

If staff are on hand in the Center, feel free to ask them for help. If they are not, give the software 2-3 minutes to load, especially if it is the first time you are using it. If it continues not to work, restart the computer. If it still doesn't work after that, please report the error so we can fix it.

Scanner Won't Turn On

If staff are on hand in the Center, feel free to ask them for help. If they are not, check the plug at the back of the scanner to ensure it has full contact. Check that you have clicked the power button and given it a few seconds to turn on. If it still doesn't work after that, please report the error so we can fix it.

Scans Take Too Long

Setting the resolution at the highest level gets you the best scan, but it is about 4 minutes per slide. If you are comfortable with a lower-quality scan, decrease the resolution to decrease the time you will scan.

Do you have a lot of slides? Contact FreedmanCenter@case.edu for more information about our bulk slide scanning equipment.

Finding the Emulsion Side

Film Negative / Slide placement during the scanning process is important for correct digitization. The Photo Negative / Photo Slide scanner digitizes beneath the image through the emulsion side of the film. Emulsion will appear dull, matte, textured and any text will appear backwards, while the correct viewing side will be a shiny plastic.

Film Negative

For film negatives, the emulsion side will be the inside of the negative's curl. For correct placement in the film negative carrier, the plastic shiny side will face up while the emulsion side will face down.

Slide

For slides, the emulsion side will have the brand / film type printed on this side or will contain the words "This side towards screen." The correct viewing side will have the slide's content description or stamped / printed serial numbers. For correct placement in the slide carrier, the plastic shiny side will face up while the emulsion side will face down.

How to Clean Dirty Film

Dirt and fingerprints can be removed from film emulsions using a solvent, like Pec-12 or PecPads, and a lint free cloth. Cleaning must be done in a well ventilated area, and the library is not that place. Consequently, KSL doesn't provide cleaning materials and requests that you prepare your slides and negatives at home before you scan.
