Bulk Photo Scanner

An overview of digitization equipment in the Freedman Center with step-by-step instructions.

Full Tutorial for the Bulk Photo Scanner

This step-by-step tutorial will set you up for best use of the bulk photo scanner. For those who just need quick scans, the quick guide may meet your needs. When in doubt, default to the full tutorial, which begins below.

If you get lost, refer back to the user manual on the Home page. Contact information for KSL staff is available on the left-hand navigation of each page. Service Center staff can also assist with basic troubleshooting.

Before You Scan

  1. The largest you can scan is 8.5” wide (by 120” long)
  2. Sort by Size
    • You want to only put same sized photos into the scanner for each batch.
    • Scan them in the vertical/portrait position. This gives more stability for the scan.
    • Break up photos into stacks of 30 or fewer.
  3. Look for delicate / sticky photos
    • If there is any debris or stickiness to the photograph, do not run it through the scanner! It can both ruin the photograph and damage the scanner.
    • If the edge looks delicate or fragile try to see if another edge is solid or straight and feed that edge into the scanner instead.
    • Not everything works in a sheet fed scanner. If it is delicate you might choose a flatbed scanner instead.
  4. Do you want to scan both sides?
    • Do you want to scan just the front or the fronts and the backs?
    • Remember there is often good information on the back

Set Up the Scanner

Check that scanner is on and in Photo Mode. The blue light should be on in the upper, right-hand corner. The small gray switch on the left side should be in the lower position or the photos won’t feed properly.

Adjust the guides to the width of your stack of photos

Remember to load the photos in portrait (tall) orientation. Adjust the gray guides to accommodate the width of your photos. If the tall black holder in back is down, pull it up as seen in the picture.
