Bulk Photo Scanner

An overview of digitization equipment in the Freedman Center with step-by-step instructions.

Software Won't Boot

If staff are on hand in the Center, feel free to ask them for help. If they are not, give the software 2-3 minutes to load, especially if it is the first time you are using it. If it continues not to work, restart the computer. If it still doesn't work after that, please report the error so we can fix it.

Scanner Won't Turn On

If staff are on hand in the Center, feel free to ask them for help. If they are not, check the plug at the back of the scanner to ensure it has full contact. Check that you have clicked the power button and given it a few seconds to turn on. If it still doesn't work after that, please report the error so we can fix it.

Scans Take Too Long

You likely have chosen a high resolution and/or front-and-back scanning. These settings equal longer scans. If you need a very high resolution, the scans may just need to take while. If you do not, lower the resolution to get a faster scan.

DPI Greater than 600 Will Not Scan

High DPIs are a marketing lie. Scanners have an optical resolution which is the true resolution of the scanner, the software may offer you interpolated resolutions higher than this but it isn’t real data. For photographs, we recommend 600 DPI as the highest setting, as you will not get additional photographic detail from more.

Image Shows Streaks

If there are strange vertical lines in the image it is because there is dust on the sensor (old pictures can shed). If the scanner needs to be cleaned, please see someone at the Freedman Center or Service Center desk to have them wipe the sensors off for you.

Scanner Jammed

Pull the gray lever on the right to open the scanner. Remove any stuck photo by just lifting it out. Close the scanner until it gives a solid click. It’s like closing a car door; it takes a little pressure for it to latch.
