Who can use the scanners?

Freedman Center technology is available to CWRU affiliates and the public. See our current hours on the Technology Lab homepage. 

Where are the scanners located?

In the Yellow Sun section of the Freedman Center Technology Lab, on the first floor of Kelvin Smith Library. 

What is the best scanner for my project?

Each scanning guide lists what the scanner is best suited for. Additionally, we have a poster in the Technology Lab (replicated below) that assists in selecting the right scanner.

What can I scan in the Freedman Center? 

See the list of what we can scan (and digitize in general!) on the Technology Lab Research Guide. If you don't see something on here and want to know if we can help, email FreedmanCenter@case.edu for a consultation. 

How long does it take to scan something?

The length of time for digitization depends on several factors:

  1. How high of a resolution you want (the more detailed the scan, the longer it takes to complete and the bigger the resulting file)
  2. How many objects you need to scan, and if you are scanning front and back
  3. Which scanner you are using
  4. How comfortable you are with the scanner

Setup is very important with digitization projects, as it keeps you from repeating the process. Be sure to check that you are scanning objects at the right settings and with the right file type as the output. 

I have a big scanning project. Any tips before I get started?

Yes: email FreedmanCenter@case.edu or book directly with us to set up a consultation. We can help you think through your workflow and make suggestions for settings and configurations so you get the best result.

What do I do if I am in the middle of a process and need help?

Look through the user manual and tutorial on the Research Guide (where you are right now!) to see if your question is addressed. Freedman Center and KSL staff can assist with basic troubleshooting. Come by during open lab times or stop by the Service Center. We cannot scan materials for you. 

Can I leave my files on the computer and come back later?

We do not recommend this and cannot guarantee the files will still be available. Computers are wiped regularly.
