Standards are industry norms and specifications that provide guidance on how materials and services are to be designed and manufactured. Standards are developed by different industry associations for the benefit of their members and the industry as whole but compliance is not mandatory, just recommended. By promoting uniformity and reliability, standards and are an essential resource in engineering and related disciplines.
Most references to standards include at least two parts--a number and a title. For example:
ASTM F1568 - 08 Standard Specification for Food Processors, Electric
The alphabetic section of the standard number refers to the issuing body. In the example above, the issuing body is the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Committee on Mechanical Preparation Equipment. The '08' at the end of the number refers to the date.
